What is Amnesia Rebirth about?
Amnesia Rebirth is set squarely in the year 1937 (March). So this means that around 100 years have passed since the horrifying events of Dark Descent. In this story, we follow an experienced French archaeologist named Anastasie Trianon aka Tasi. She goes off on a daring expedition in the heart of colonial Africa. However, on the journey there her plane fully crashes and she finds her crash-landed in an Algerian desert. When she wakes up, she finds that she has no memories of what took place just after the crash. To make matters worse, she finds that her companions are missing as well.
But Tasi goes forward with her expedition and follows the trail because she wants to look for Salim, her husband. While going through a cave she finds the Traveler’s Amulet. This alien device gives her the power to travel to a singular alien world using rifts. Throughout her journey, Tasi goes on to find Salim and also learns more about herself. She finds ruins that tell her about the Amulet as well as the alien race that was behind it all. As for her expedition mates, she does find them as well.
But not in full human conditions. As a result of that, she has to make decisions regarding their survival. In the end, the game will leave you to choose between 4 options. We will discuss these in the Features sub-topic below.
Gameplay
The game, just like Dark Descent, needs to be played from a first-person perspective. You will be controlling Tasi here as you wander in and out of caves and ruins to find out about the location of her companions. One of the first things you will notice about the game is its lighting. It is very dimly lit so you will need to make use of your light sources like fuel lamps. These will allow you to see more clearly and move forward in the game. Apart from lamps, you will also find matches that you can use to light up the mounted candles and torches.
As for the game, there are a variety of puzzles that you will need to solve to progress forward. If you have played the very first game then you must know that there is a fear level. Now, this fear level will be built up slowly. It will, however, overwhelm her as she will walk in the pitch-black darkness. Now, this will cause her to hear voices and hallucinate.
But you can manage this fear level by hiding from grotesque monsters, solving puzzles, as well as by managing the light sources so that you are never out of light. As for the combat system, there’s none in the game so when you encounter a monster then there are only two options for you- to hide or run.

- The ending
The ending is undoubtedly one of the best parts of the game. After all, you can choose from 4 options. As such there are 4 endings. In the first ending, you can choose to give up Amari (Tasi’s daughter) to the alien empress so that she can give the baby, the vitae necessary for her survival. However, this will turn Task into a ghoul and she will roam the Gate Builder ruins with only some memories of her daughter Amari.
However, if you decide to take on the Empress then you will be injecting red-flesh into the empress and killing her. However, this will end up killing both you (Tasi) and Amari. In the third option, you can flee with your daughter and get beyond the reaches of the Empress. The option you choose determines how the game ends. But all the options make the game more fun to play.
- No saving
Unlike the previous Dark Descent game, know that if you get killed then you won’t be able to reload or re-spawn at a save point. If you are feeling dread then there’s no need to. This game makes it easier for you since all the death will bring you a little forward. As such due to this, you will be able to skip managing the monster entirely. This will surely give a lot of gamers some relief.
- Puzzles
The game is full of puzzles that you will need to solve. All puzzles will need you to use your mind as well as the resources that you have at your disposal to win. Not to mention that the puzzles will be related to the level you are playing. For example: if you are playing in the laboratory location then you will need to solve the puzzles using the contraptions present there.
Similarly, if you are on the hunting grounds then you will need to use whatever is at your disposal to solve the puzzles. Also do note that there are some time-bound puzzles as well.
- Various locations
Know that there are various locations and levels in the game. The first one is called The Fortress while the other is called The Cistern. In the latter, you will be wading into sewers and solving puzzles that have hatches and wheels. But that’s not all. There is a portal chamber, hunting grounds, and laboratory that you need to navigate as well. Not to mention that there are the tower and theater along with other locations that you will need to discover and play in. All of it will make the game fun and entertaining.
